What is a Gear Calculator?
A gear calculator (also known as a gear ratio calculator or sprocket calculator) helps cyclists understand how their bike's gearing translates to speed and effort. It calculates the relationship between your chainring, cassette cogs, wheel size, and pedaling cadence to show you exactly how fast you'll go in each gear.
How to Use
Select your gearing system type (derailleur, hub gear, or singlespeed), choose your chainring and cassette/cog configuration, set your tire size, and adjust the cadence. The chart will visualize all your gear combinations, showing speed or development for each gear. Use Compare mode to see two setups side-by-side.
Why Use It?
Planning a new bike build? Comparing cassette options? The gear calculator helps you visualize your entire gear range, identify gaps or overlaps between chainrings, and ensure your setup matches your riding terrain. Whether you're optimizing for steep climbs or flat speed, this tool shows exactly what each gear delivers.
Understanding the Results
- Speed: Speed shows how fast you travel at your selected cadence in each gear. Higher speeds require more effort to maintain.
- Development: Development (in meters) shows how far you travel with one full pedal revolution. A higher development means more ground covered per pedal stroke.
- Gear Inches: Gear inches is a traditional measurement that makes it easy to compare gearing across different wheel sizes. Higher gear inches = harder gear.
